Closing the COVID Learning Gap

Educators and parents have always worried about the Summer Slide. Now that concern pales in comparison to the learning lost through the months of COVID.

Many parents trying to keep learning going at home have discovered that their students were already struggling academically in ways they hadn’t realized and feel helpless in addressing.  They look on as their children struggle to focus in online classes, turn off their cameras and have difficulty learning new concepts and completing their work.

Many educators worry about online learning and the difficulty of engaging students, the widening disparities between students who are keeping up with grade-level expectations and those who continue to fall farther and farther behind.  They worry even more about the millions of students it is estimated aren’t even showing up for school at all, remotely or otherwise.

Most schools have never had to help students catch up from learning losses, at least at the current scale.  Filling in the gaps and getting students back on track will require a new approach that capitalizes on what we understand from research about the science of learning.
