Concussion and Youth Sports

Concussion and Youth Sports

In 2009, the state of Washington passed the first state law mandating school policies regarding concussions in young athletes. Since then, all 50 states and the District of Columbia have passed laws related to concussion management in schools. In the past, concussion management has focused on “return to play.” Now, the focus is broadening to “return to learn,” and the potential effects of concussion on cognitive functions and school performance.

In this webinar, we will discuss the latest developments related to brain injuries in youth sports, explaining what a concussion means, signs and symptoms, protocols for treatment, the fast-evolving technology of monitoring impacts to prevent and better assess injuries, and the issues associated with returning safely to the playing field, as well as implications for cognitive functioning and academic performance.

This webinar features two experts in concussion management and the latest developments in brain injury tracking and treatment. Jim Buskirk, PT, SCS, works with professional and amateur athletes in a wide range of sports, including the Chicago Wolves professional hockey team, and the men’s hockey teams at Northwestern University and DePaul University. Dan Nicholson, CEO of Head Case, is working to bring awareness to the national concussion epidemic, and is applying his 20 years of experience in technology and data management to the complex issue of tracking and evaluating sports-related impacts.
