Gesturing Reflects Language Development in Young Children

 

Gesturing by very young children is associated with language development. Research shows that observing gestures can help predict language delays and may eventually be useful in diagnosing language development problems before a child actually begins to speak. The research, conducted at the University of Chicago, also suggests that encouraging gesturing can help foster language development and reinforces the connection between language and cognitive development.
