Digital Promise Reading Success

Reading Success Depends on Cognitive Factors

Digital Promise has created an interactive model of the factors at play in learning to read and mastering other aspects of literacy from ages 4 to 6. The factors are divided into four categories, Literacy, Cognition, Social and Emotional Learning, and Student Background.

This interactive model is great for exploring the networks of factors and the connections among them that are critical for children to become proficient readers. So, for example, Attention is very important for reading (as just about everythingthat happens in school). But it has specific connections to other literacy-related factors, as shown in this image:

These models make clear how interdependent and integrated cognitive skills are with the reading process. This is why cognitive training programs have to integrate multiple skills in the way they deliver challenges to the user and why BrainWare SAFARI cognitive training software was developed in the way it was. The models also explain that students may struggle with reading for reasons that have nothing to do with the adequacy of their reading instruction. Many students struggle with reading becauseof issues with cognitive processes like working memory, visual reasoning, inhibition, and attention.

The images we’ve captured here don’t do justice of course to the model itself because you can interact with it and start at any point to see the essential connections. We hope you will check it out and explore the factors and skills for yourself.
